Usage of Back Contacts

We are experimenting with different nanostructures to improve PV efficiency and we are uncertain about the usage of patterned and unpatterned back contacts. How exactly does a back contact
improve Jsc? What different types of patterns are there.
Any form of reference would be greatly appreciated.

I am not an expert on this topic but my understanding is that the back contact enhances the optical absorption by,

  1. Reflecting the light so any unabsorbed light travels back through the absorbing media allowing them to get absorbed.

  2. Patterns in the back contacts are used to trap light (make the traveling path longer) and thus improve the absorption.

There are lots of publications (and books) showing the use of patterned back contacts to improve PV efficiency. A simple search is google scholar should provide you with some relevant articles.

Thank you for the reply.
