How to install on RHEL 8?

Installation on RHEL 8.

This covers installation on a minimal RHEL 8. This was tested on a VM and AWS-EC2 with a new installation of RHEL 8.

(1) Install / update system packages.

  1. Update your RHEL 8 installation
    sudo dnf -y update
    sudo dnf -y install lsb   
    
  2. Create your Downloads folder (if not found)
    cd ~
    mkdir Downloads
    
  3. Download and install the following RPMs from CentOS repository.
    # change directory to Downloads folder
    cd ~/Downloads
    
    # install wget if not installed
    sudo dnf -y install wget   
    
    # download required packages for RHEL 8. 
    wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7.6.1810/os/x86_64/Packages/tcl-8.5.13-8.el7.x86_64.rpm
    wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7.6.1810/os/x86_64/Packages/tk-8.5.13-6.el7.x86_64.rpm
    
    # install the packages including a web browser and update your installation.
    sudo dnf -y install lsb
    sudo dnf -y install tcl-8.5.13-8.el7.x86_64.rpm
    sudo dnf -y install tk-8.5.13-6.el7.x86_64.rpm
    sudo dnf -y install firefox
    

(2) Install X Windows.

  1. Install X11 packages.

    sudo dnf -y install xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-xauth
    
  2. Enable X11 forwarding.

    sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    # change X11Forwarding to 'yes' if this is set to 'no'

    Save and Exit vi editor.

  3. Restart SSH service.

    sudo systemctl restart sshd
    

(3) Connect using Putty or MobaXterm from Windows

Download install package before hand.

  1. You can download the installation package beforehand on another machine and copy this over to your Linux machine via SFTP or directly from MobaXterm.
  2. Then unpack and install as per our KB guide.
