How can I import SWG ring resonator structure to MODE Solution

#1

Hello,

I have designed SWG ring resonator in Sketchup and I could import it as a STL in FDTD very easily but when I want to import this file to Mode Solution it has error "unable to construct planar solid from source data. please verify the data in C:/…"
how can I draw SWG ring resonator in Mode ?
could you please guide me ?

Thank you

Hi @elnaz,

I’m not too sure what could cause the issue you have with the stl import in MODE. It could be a bug, have you tried with the latest version (7.9.1157)?

Also, you should be able to simply copy and paste the structure from FDTD to MODE.

Dear Sir

Good day,

I have drawn my structure in google sketchup and export it as a STL and
import in FDTD as I have attached the STL file. but for group index
calculation I tried to copy this structure to Mode Solution, but after copy
, I didn’t see anything. also I couldn’t import STL file directly to Mode
Solution. The version of our Mode Solution is 7.6.631
Thank you for your kind attention.

Elnaz

Hi Elnaz,

Can you upload the stl file as well? It seems it wasn’t imported in the simulation file, as there’s only the ring resonator.

Yes Sure , I have uploaded and Thank you

I was able to copy and paste the imported structure from FDTD Solutions into MODE Solutions using the latest version of the software (MODE Solutions version 7.9.1157).

You may want to try updating the version of your software, and you can download the latest version from here:

Hi,

From the error message it doesn’t look like a license issue. I think you would just need to add a varFDTD simulation region object first before running the simulation. Let me know if it helps.

Dear Nancy

Thank you so much; I could run it now, I have 2 questions;
Can I calculate Q factor in FDTD mode?
And when I copy SWG ring structure from fdtd to mode ; it seems the grating
are not exactly on top of the ring and structure is not correct.

Thank you for your kind help.

Hi Elnaz,

When copying the structure from FDTD to MODE, you can adjust the position of the structure element. Just edit its properties and modify x, y or z.

In the object library of FDTD Solutions, you will find some analysis tools. incuding Q analysis for resonators:

You can just select the analysis group you want to use and insert it in your simulation.
