Determine numbers of mode used in EME simulation


I am wondering if there is a guideline or testing to determine the numbers of mode needed to get accurate EME simulations. For example, for the simulation of MMI, how many modes do we need to set?

This really depends on your required accuracy and what error you can accept. In the limit where the number of modes is infinite, the amount of error associated with the EME calculation goes to zero. In reality, only a limited number of modes can be used in an EME calculation, since more modes means longer simulation time and more memory. It is always a good idea to start with a small number of modes for the initial calculations, and increase as necessary until the result converges.

Note that the number of modes is only one aspect that determines the accuracy of your simulation and it is recommended to conduct a full convergence testing as it is described here.
