Get Involved

This site aims to facilitate thoughtful exchanges between photonics experts. As a member of that community, we encourage you to participate in discussions that make this site an interesting place to be. You can get involved many ways by:

  • Helping other community members find the best content by liking quality content provided by others;
  • Flagging offensive posts or posts that offer negligible value to help eliminate such content from the site;
  • Contributing your own answers to questions and discussions you find on this site; and
  • Taking the discussion offline and out of the public domain when appropriate by private messaging other members.

The more you participate the more trust you earn from the community. If you participate enough, the system will automatically reward you by granting you moderation privileges. You can get started today by showcasing your expertise and background in your profile settings.

Be Respectful

This site is a place where respectful professionals can help each other and, when disagreements occur, those individuals can work through their differences of opinion in a professional and respectful way. To help ensure this happens, we encourage all community members to flag any posts that are disrespectful, offensive or inappropriate; apart from flagging that content, no other action should be taken and no other response should be given as that adds clutter and unprofessional posts to the site.

If those posts are flagged by enough members, the system will automatically remove the offending content, helping keep the site clean and an enjoyable place to engage in discussion. Authors who continue to demonstrate their inability to treat community members with respect can also have their access privileges revoked. If you disagree with others, propose something better. If you come across inappropriate content, flag that content but otherwise ignore them.

Post Intelligently

Asking questions: If people cannot understand the question you are asking, do not read the post because the subject was vague, or the question lacks important information, it is very unlikely you will receive a quality response. To get the answer you are looking for, in the shortest amount of time:

  1. Submit your question to the right category. If you do not, moderators will need to move your question to the right category, resulting in delays for you to get your answer.
  2. Choose relevant tags for your post. This helps other members find your question, as some members have auto-alerts set up for specific tags that align with their area of expertise.
  3. Ensure you use a descriptive subject for your question. If people don’t understand the nature of the question you are asking, they will be less inclined to read your post. A more descriptive title also helps ensure your post ranks higher in searches making it more visible to potential answerers.
  4. Create a new thread for each question. Threads with multiple unrelated questions are more difficult to search for, categorize, tag and answer.
  5. Include all the relevant information in the body of your question, including project files and links to supporting materials if required. Without a complete set of information, community members will need to ask for more information, creating additional delays.
  6. If your post needs to make reference to a scientific publication or other copyrighted work, please reference that publication by including the publication url and not the publication itself.  Posts that include the actual copyrighted publication may not be accepted for posting or may be removed.

Answering questions: The best answer is a complete, concise response that answers the question with supporting materials (project files, etc) attached. Before answering, if the question isn’t in the right category you should request that it be moved. Similarly, if the question is not clear or does not provide all the necessary information you should ask the original poster for clarification. When answering questions:

  1. Write your entire answer in a single post, rather than in a series of posts. If you have additional information to add after making your post, consider editing the original post rather than creating another post.
  2. Use inline images where possible. Reading your post is easier with inline images because there is no need to refer to the attachments at the end of the post.
  3. Include as much information as possible in the body of your post. Information stored in attachments may not be included in the site search, making it more difficult for members to find your post.
